The Swadeshi movement was started in protest against the partition of Bengal and this movement was formally launched in a meeting in the Town Hall of Calcutta on August 7, 1905. Its idea was first presented in 1905 AD in the letter Sanjeevani of 'Krishna Kumar Mitra'.

- In this movement, Swadeshi leaders appealed to Indians to boycott government services, schools, courts and foreign goods and encourage indigenous goods and encourage national education by establishing national colleges and schools. So it was not only a political movement but also an economic movement.
- The Swadeshi Movement had achieved immense success. Even the landlords in Bengal had participated in this movement. Women and students took part in picketing.
- Students boycotted books made from foreign paper. Many leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal and Arvind Ghosh were imprisoned.
- Many Indians lost their jobs and students who participated in the movement were barred from entering schools and colleges.
- Singing Vande Mataram during the movement meant treason. This was the first time that the use of manufactured goods was kept in mind.
