Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born in 1820 AD in a poor Brahmin family and achieved a great achievement as a student of Sanskrit. For his great teachings, the Sanskrit College of Calcutta, of which he had been the principal for some years, conferred on him the title of 'Vidyasagar'. He emerged as a great and famous personality among the downtrodden and downtrodden due to his simple living, fearless nature, self-sacrifice, his dedication towards education. He started the study of modern western thought in the Sanskrit College and admitted the so called low caste students to the college to study Sanskrit.
Earlier, only traditional subjects were studied in Sanskrit College. The study of Sanskrit was also monopolized by the Brahmins and the so-called lower castes were not allowed to study Sanskrit. He also contributed to the development of Bengali language and due to this contribution he is considered as the father of modern Bengali language. He was also seriously associated with many newspapers and magazines and also wrote many important articles advocating social reforms.
Her most important contribution was the improvement of the condition of widows and the spread of women's education. She was instrumental in getting the Act passed to legalize widow-remarriage. He personally participated in the first widow-remarriage held in Calcutta in 1856. She was also attacked by orthodox Hindus due to her efforts for widow-remarriage and women's education. Many new schools were established including the school for The higher officials did not like his work and eventually he resigned from his post. He was also associated with Bethune, who founded the first school for women's education in Calcutta in 1849.
