Malabar was a Muslim majority area. These Muslims were known as Moplas. Moplahs were mostly farmers or working class who used to work in tea or coffee plantations. They were uneducated, so religious fanaticism was also more in them.

CAUSE
Moplas were suffering from foreign rule, Hindu landlords and moneylenders. Being helpless due to their sad situation, in 19-20th century, the Moplas expressed protest and resentment again and again. Before 1857, there were about 22 movements of the Moplas. Moplah rebellion took place in 1882-85, 1896 and later in 1921 as well. In 1870, the government constituted a committee to examine the repeated protests by the Moplas in Malabar. Some things came out in the report of this committee that the reasons for these protests are eviction of the farmers from the land, arbitrary increase in rent etc.

NATURE OF REBELLION
The movement of Mopla farmers was violent. Moplas raided the houses of landlords, looted money and killed. The property of temples was also looted. Moneylenders were also put to death. Unrest spread throughout Malabar. The government, on its part, also used force to control the Mopla rebellion. But the Moplas were not afraid of anyone. He had a feeling in his mind that in this movement he is not dying but becoming a martyr and he will get heaven for this work.

END OF REBELLION
The government suppressed the Mopla rebellion by force. There were organizational weaknesses in this rebellion. This rebellion did not last for long. The Moplas also got the support of some big farmers in their movement. The Mopla rebellion that took place in 1921 was very widespread. To suppress this rebellion, the government had to take the help of the army.
